Making the team

The first week of school I went, by myself, to one of the recruitment meetings. When I say recruitment I mean like campus recruitment, like anyone and their sister could come.

It was a nightmare trying to get there, but something in me said I had to go. Being new to campus I had no clue where to park or which building was which. So, I parked my car and got on a campus bus that I hoped would take me to the right place.

As I made my trek to the building where the meeting was held I couldn’t help but feel many emotions. I was nervous to walk into a room full of real athletes and look like a total outcast. But somehow I still convinced myself to go.

When I walked in I was relieved to find that there were girls of all shapes and sizes. Tall and small, some with round bellies and others with profound muscles. I sat down and made some small talk with the girls next to me.

I sized them up for their athletic ability compared to mine. Once I pushed the thought that I wasn’t a real athlete aside, I was able to tune in to what the coaches and varsity rowers were saying.

At the end they played a sweet hype video and I was in. Let the fun begin!

Fast forward through more meetings and more forms filled out, and we are at the first few practices.

To make the team we had to proved we were willing to work hard during GRIT Day. I was both excited and nervous for that day. I wanted so badly to make the team, but didn’t know if I had what it would take to make the cut.

That practice was everything from tug of war to tire flipping and sand bag carries. Looking back, it was one of the most fun practices! It was every women for herself, competing in circuit style workouts. The competition paired with the different movement every station had me in heaven.

A couple days later we found out who made the team. Myself, along with many other girls made it and were thrilled. So we made the team, now what?

Next week I’ll share my experience with how to use an erg and being out on the water for the first time.

I found that I liked working out so I took it to the next level with this team. Where can you take something you like to do and elevate it?

Stay Adventurous!
